The “ant colony” project began in the Summer of 2014, during Operation Protective Edge – the war in Gaza. In the background, on television and the internet, we were faced by the constant stream of images showing the horrific violence committed by ISIS and by Boko Haram – annihilation, beheadings, repression and rape of women. Meanwhile, local media featured constant reporting on threats from Hamas, rockets landing on southern Israel, the bombing of Gaza from the air and sea, and, of course, the terrorists’ underground tunnels. Every possible screen intimidated with its outpouring of male energy rejoicing at the battle: generals, religious leaders, politicians, in uniform and in black suits, scenes of destruction, ruins, terror and fear, screams of women and mothers and orphans in shock. Within the mixture of horrors and utter illogic was the despairing revelation that there was “nothing new under the sun,” as humanity seemed to have sublimated nothing and has regressed to the Stone Age, with the “battle to the strong.”
Meanwhile I was making sculptures of ants. At first, I made tiny ones, but the single, miniature ant rapidly became a living, breathing colony. Its body was transformed, growing to monumental proportions about two meters in height, taking on a phallic shape as befitting current reality, in which masculine physical force is dominant. Deeper observation and meditation on the fundamental essence of “force,” “megalomania,” “strength,” and “violence” seemed to show me that they were fearful and frightened of themselves, but in practice, were dangerous and destructive. My desire to make this masculine power visibly present was reflected in the marvelous ants, made out of material into which I could “breathe the breath of life.” I could create the illusion of being big, strong and omnipotent, yet in the blink of an eye this illusion could be punctured – literally. A different ant could be given life, power and strength, an ant which until the preceding moment was flat and lifeless. In one second, the air pump could transform it into something predatory and dangerous…All of its strength, power and destructive potential is due to the air pump.
